Barcombe Village Hall

BBM were invited to take part in a limited design competition to design a new village hall for the residents of Barcombe in East Sussex.

Our brief was to provide a collection of facilities that were flexible enough to function as a convention village hall and a working mens club, while providing an adaptable auditorium space for a highly successful amateur dramatics and music society.

BBM proposed a collection of buildings that divided this rural agricultural site into ‘front’& ‘back of house’, car park, sheltered garden courtyard and play ground. The buildings forms and hierarchies resemble that of a traditional farm yard. Construction strategies mixed the use of materials sourced locally, made from waste or second hand material, with high tech devices such as fully integrated solar roofs providing hot water and electricity for the complex.
