BBM Sustainable Design were proud to be presented with a Commendation for their new build house Priory Barn at the Friends of Lewes Awards Ceremony. The Friends of Lewes are a civic society that aims to conserve and enhance the key aspects of Lewes, drawing attention to notable local work and celebrating quality design and craftsmanship through their awards, held every three years.
Priory Barn, a new build house and garden designed by BBM, replaces a dilapidated light industrial unit in the conservation area of Lewes. The two-storey, three-bedroom house was commended for its careful detailing and excellent standards of execution. Many people locally believed building a new house on this ancient and tight site was not possible, but despite those restrictions BBM created a new home for their client with a light and open feel. Notable design features include the nameplate in the front facade, the neatly recessed meter boxes, and the internal stair using a combination of metal work and oak joinery.
Other nominations this year for the Friends of Lewes Awards included an eco-house replacement for some derelict chicken huts and a development of riverside apartments.
